David Katz, CIO of Matrix Asset Advisors, joins “Squawk Alley” to discuss the state of the markets as stocks recover from the coronavirus selloff.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average rallied on Thursday, wrapping up its best week in more than 80 years, after the Federal Reserve gave more details on how it will support the economy amid the coronavirus pandemic.

The Dow jumped 411 points, or 1.7%. The S&P 500 gained 1.9% while the Nasdaq Composite advanced 1.1%. The U.S. stock market will be closed Friday due to Good Friday. Stocks came off their highs after Democrats in Congress blocked a Republican effort for unanimous support for 0 billion in small-business aid.

Thursday’s gains put the major averages on pace for strong weekly gains. Dow was up more than 13% for the week, putting it on pace for its biggest weekly gain since 1938. The S&P 500 was up 12.8% week to date, on pace for its best week since 1974. The Nasdaq had gained 10.9% and was headed for its best weekly performance since 2008.

WARREN BUFFETT: Thanks for coming.

ANDY SERWER: So let’s start off and talk about the economy a little bit. And obviously, we’ve been on a good long run here.

WARREN BUFFETT: A very long run.

ANDY SERWER: And does that surprise you? And what would be the signs that you would look for to see that things were winding down?

WARREN BUFFETT: Well, I look at a lot of figures just in connection with our businesses. I like to get numbers. So I’m getting reports in weekly in some businesses, but that doesn’t tell me what the economy’s going to six months from now or three months from now. It tells me what’s going on now with our businesses. And it really doesn’t make any difference in what I do today in terms of buying stocks or buying businesses what those numbers tell me. They’re interesting, but they’re not guides to me.

We all want to feel like we’re getting a deal. We coupon, we look for discount codes, and we wait for Labor Day to head to the car dealership or the mattress store.

We do it as consumers and as investors — with stocks we hunt for bargains, hoping to recognize an absurd value before the rest of the market catches on and shares rocket up.

Some people — especially new folks with Robinhood investing accounts — turn to penny stocks or look for the best stocks under or hoping to make some easy money. But that’s actually one of the most destructive ways to invest.

In this video, we break down the difference between stock price and valuation and explain why seemingly expensive stocks (based on price) can actually be “cheap stocks”.
