Stock markets like NASDAQ and NYSE allow people to start trading at 4 a.m. EST. Premarket lasts from 4 a.m. EST until market open (9:30 a.m. EST). Pre-market trading can be done but there are dangers and you should approach this style of trading cautiously.

The first factor to focus on is liquidity. You can use StocksToTrade screeners to help filter out illiquid stocks. AVOID stocks that are illiquid, because you might get stuck in a trade that you can’t find a buyer for.

The second thing to be aware of in premarket trading is the stocks’ news. Many times, premarket movers are spiking on headlines that traders haven’t taken the time to really research. Sometimes this “news” isn’t news at all.

The final thing to pay attention to in premarket trading is a setup called the dip and rip. You’ll see these stocks that spike quickly, and you get the early profit takers around the market open. Then the stock can stabilize and re-trend towards the high of the day, during that 9:45 a.m. window.

Remember, make informed decisions when participating in premarket trading, avoid trading illiquid stocks, understand the stocks’ news, and never rush into a trade.
